I've got to get my Johnson 25 hp back together. I've got the lower unit all apart, New bearings, seals, O-rings and water pump. Any one have any pointers on how to get it back together. My main worry is the shift rod seal. I had a hard time getting the old one out and I'm not sure what to use to seal the new one in. Something that will hold up to the gear oil, but will come out later if needed. Thread Loc, RTV, Fingernail Polish?? Some one suggested the lower hardness Thread Loc, (Non-permanent). I will probably use that if now one knows anything better.
Also, I could use a new tail piece, if anyone has a junk 25 setting around. |

I don't know what year your's is , but mine is an '86 30 hp and the manual covers 25 hp also.
When I have a question on the motor and the manual isn't helping me, I go to walleye central's website. Search the boat & motor section for Johnson 25 or lower unit - good chance you'll get lucky and find your answer there, or at least be able to contact other members for answers.
Hope this helps. |

I finally got my johnson back together. It's been in pieces in the garage for 3 years. Boxes of parts here and there. I had forgot one bearing and picked it up at Knox Lake Marina. Along with a Detent ball that I had lost. Put it on the boat, Filled a trash can with water, and it started on the third pull. I want to test it out before the final Tourney but my truck is in the shop, tranny . After the tourney the wife and I are taking the boat to the Ohio River at Forked Run State Park. Just need to get away. These 60, 72 and 84 hour weeks are killing me.
Good luck to everyone this week, I'm at work. Be safe.
Thanks for the info, That's a good site. I used a medium thread lock on the seals. |

Congratulations! That was no easy feat! I'm the guy who winds up taking the bushel basket of parts to the repairman.
Sorry you have to work today - See you at the big one!

Thanks Dave,
I tried that and found out they charge more if I helped them by taking it all apart.
My Father-in-law has a small engine repair. He works on Weed Eaters but wont touch a boat motor. My wife says it's because he doesn't like the water.
Tear 'em up tonight,
Jerry |
