Ronster, nice to have you on the site.
I have to be honest with you, I have never tried yellow bellies for bait, but I pretty much fish for channels. I have heard great things about yellows for flatheads though. I know there are plenty of yellow bellies in Oshay though. If you go back in the twin lakes area towards the bridge, there are tos of yellows in there.
I mayhave to try them out. Do you remove the fins? |

| Welcome ronster! You are right, Yellow bellies are killer in the spring! I have not used them in years but when I first started targeting flatheads the licking river was my primay target. Nothing worked better than a little mudcat on a sliprig in shallow(2-4ft) snags. I rarely even think about it anymore. Thanks for the reminder!! I used to hook mine above the dorsel fin. They seemed to struggle more that way. I am still a shad and herring guy but mudcats are a great early bait. |

Usually i wont because big shovelheads in the rivers and lakes eat them and they still have there barbs. Plus i dont really think it matters to the fish either that or they just dont pay enough attention to see if it has its barbs or not. But the 1 great thing about my yellows are that they r in a pond about 3 mins from my house walking distance. And when my dad was a kid he fished n the pond but a sewage line broke and killed everything in the pond except them. But the sewage has cleared out and they still have a horrible smell to them thats the good thing stinkyer the better. _________________ REPLY BACK!!! |

| Well I least I will know what kind of bait to use if you come to the tourneys and start beating everyone. LOL. I may have to try it out sometime. My favs are creek chubs and shad. That is just about all I use. I have tried other bait, but nine times out of ten, the shad works as good as anyhting. |
